AMD 2 2011 Duden

For this week's AMD post, I read the article titled: "Duden Publishes 'Words of the Decade' Volume." It focused primarily on the Duden's (the Merriam-Webster of Germany) addition of new words to its collection, primarily slang words. Words like Huftgold, Dosenpfand, and Googeln were all added. It's very interesting to compare these additions to the words that the English Merriam-Webster has recently added; words like crunk, perfect storm, and ginormous. More and more dictionaries around the world are excepting these new words as legitimate words relevant to all of society. It is also interesting to note the linguistics of some of these new German words and how closely they follow the spelling and sounding of their English origins. Get-together, Drop-down Menu, and Gangsta-Rap are all examples of the following. The same can be said for words borrowed from the Italian language, seeing as the spelling is identical; Pancetta, Cafe Latte, and Bruschetta.
