Because fast food is such a prominent aspect to our American culture, I decided to see what was typical German fast food. Hamburgers and french fries are typical dishes of American fast food places, I wonder if Spätzle or Schnitzel are super cheap and quick options at a fast food place. I found an article on Spiegel Online, which was written around the 2006 World Cup, hosted in Germany. The typical German fast-food shop and stall is called "Imbiss" or "Schnellimbiss." There is the Bockwurst, a typical basically are pork and beef and sometimes turkey, boiled in brine. There is the Bratwurst, which is a standard fried sausage with a slice of white bread. Bratwurst im Brötchen is the same as above but placed in a baguette. An interesting choice is "the Currywurst," which is actually just a bratwurst, sliced up in some special machine with a dollop of curry ketchup, this might come with a sprinkle of curry powder and of course, the obligatory piece of stale white bread. Frikadelle is a type of burger, made from pork or minced beef. Hähnchen is a type of chicken seasoned with paprika, usually served with fries. Krakauer is a type of Polish Sausage that has a much more garlic flavor than a typical bratwurst. Mett is the German version of Tartar and consists of raw minced pork seasoned with salt, pepper and nutmeg and served on rolls often topped with raw onions. Good mett is actually a delicacy often found in upscale restaurants. Pommes are french fries, often dipped in mayo. There are also typical German cuisine choices at these fast food locations. Wiener Schnitzel (Vienna Style). Classically a breaded veal escalope, but nine times out of ten it’s pork here, usually served with a wedge of lemon and chips and no sauce. Jäger Schnitzel (Hunter’s style). The usual breaded pork escalope, this time served with a mushroom gravy or sauce (sometimes a mushroom cream sauce). Zigeuner Schnitzel (Gypsy style). This breaded escalope is served with a sweet and sour sauce which usually contains a lot of sliced red and green peppers. Spätzle is also very common. Schweinshaxe, is an oven roast knuckle of pork considered a delicacy especially in Bavaria and southern Germany.

It seems that bratwurst is the German hamburger. There are tons of variants to it and it is served almost everywhere. It is usually very cheap too.
